Adela Young (1932 - 2018)

It is with many mixed emotions we announce the passing of my sweet mother, Adela.  We will always remember her for her four- inch heels, infectious laughter, and love of music and dancing.

Mom was born in Batangas, Philippines on November 8th, 1932 to Macario and Isabel DeLuna Gomez.  She was the fourth of six children, and grew up in the shadow of Clark Air Force Base near Manilla. In the 1960s, she met Carlen Young, a handsome US airman, and the two soon fell in love.  They married in Bangkok,Thailand; moved to Denver, Colorado and had one daughter, Christine. They later moved their little family to San Antonio, Texas where Carlen died of cancer in 1977.  Left a widow, Adela raised their daughter on her own.  The two moved to Indianapolis, Indiana to be closer to family and grieve Carlen's loss. As she raised Christine, she leaned on Carlen's family for support, and created her own family of beloved lifelong friends.

Education and her Catholic faith were important to Adela.  In Indianapolis, she put her daughter in St. Barnabas School, and went back to school herself.  She faithfully raised her daughter in the Catholic church by practice and example, teaching not only Christine, but her friends how to pray the rosary.  (The proper way is kneeling by your bed -no slouching- while cussing two uncooperative teenage girls.) We will never forget her dancing and shouting about getting straight A's ( "I GET ALL A's!!!  I GET ALL A's!!! I GET ALL A's!!!") one very good semester.  In life, she had seen war, so she celebrated the tiniest things - good grades, dance recitals, time with friends.  She took pictures (frequently with a thumb in the way) of her daughter and her friends.  She leaves behind many memories of good times and great fun.

In 1986, mom heard California calling her. (It may have also been Christine nagging her, but who remembers?!)   Palm trees, snowless winters and a large Filipino community reminded her of her home overseas.  In 1987 she and Christine relocated to San Diego, where she resided until her death on February 10th, 2018.

Adela is survived by her daughter, Christine Young, of San Diego.  She leaves behind one sibling, Christy Gomez, of Colorado.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and other siblings, Encarnacion Gomez Camacho, Elias Gomez, Emilo Gomez, Jose Gomez.

We are sad because she is no longer with us, but rejoice knowing she is dancing in heaven with her beloved husband, Carlen.

Two simple services with be held in her honor:

In California, a memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 22nd at the California Burial Chapel in National City, California from 5:30 to 8pm.

In Indiana, close friends and family are asked to gather on March 2nd, 1:00pm one hour prior to burial at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood, Indiana.  Internment will be beside her husband, Carlen.
