Albert Shoemaker, 94, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021, in Austin, Texas . He was a former resident of Indianapolis . He was born November 18, 1926 in Beattyville, Kentucky to Luther Edwin and Minnie (Horton) Shoemaker . During his childhood , he and his family moved frequently as his father was a foreman building bridges across the south .

Albert left high school to work on the Liberty Ships as an electrician in Savannah , Georgia . When the war was over, the family moved to Indianapolis where he completed high school and became an electrical apprentice in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 481 . He worked on many commercial properties including hospitals, office buildings and the Indianapolis Airport . He ended his career at National Starch .

He will long be remembered for the thousands of lives he touched through more than 65 years of service to the Boy Scouts of America . As a boy , he earned the Eagle Scout award . He was Assistant Scout Master and later Scoutmaster of Troop 1 in Indianapolis . He continued in scouting by teaching adult leaders through Firecrafter and Wood Badge . He was awarded the Silver Beaver award through the Pioneer District which is the highest recognition offered by the State of Indiana . He was also awarded Outstanding Eagle Scout award by the National Eagle Scout Association . For over 50 years , beginning in 1959, he worked the 500 Mile Parade supervising the Eagle Scouts s e tting up chairs in the VIP section . Over the years , he met many celebrities, movie stars and even shook hands with President Gerald Ford . When he retired, he joined the Tuesday Cre w who did maintenance work at Camp Belzer . One of the highlights of his long career was visiting the father of s c outing, Lord Baden Powell's h ome in London , England .

Albert was a member of Englewood Masonic Lodge #715, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and Murat Shrine .

He enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzle s and proudly framed and displayed them . He never came across something broken that he didn't try to fix . He enjoyed puzzles and brain teasers . He really enjoyed magic, but he liked figuring out how the trick worked even better .

Albert will be fondly remembered by ex-spouse Cherie Shoemaker, two daughters, Lynda Rife (Wally Vog ) of Austin, T X and Janet Meadors of Indianapolis, IN; 5 grandchildren , Zach (Marissa) Rife, Alex Rife, Courtney (Stephen) Taylor, Jessie Meadors , and Samantha Meadors ; 3 great-grandchildren , Jackson, Addie and Lexi Taylor and his extended family .

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 14 th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with a service and burial following at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens and Funeral Home located at 1977 S State Rd 135, Greenwood, IN 46143 .
