Mr. Alfred Piel, Indianapolis, passed away on the evening of February 16, 2023 at his residence. He was 94. Al was born April 7, 1928 in Indianapolis, Indiana, a son of the late Alfred and Ruth (Weekly) Piel.
Al attended Warren Central High School then proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Army. Al was a professional truck driver and had driven for Jack Cole Trucking for 18 years and later drove for Commercial Lovelace for 12 years before retiring. During his time driving, he had earned several safety awards. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 135 as well as the VFW Post 2999 in Indianapolis.
Al was a gifted mechanic and from 1964 until 2019 he worked many many hours in his garage repairing cars and trucks for his family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, traveling on family vacations and watching NASCAR. He also enjoyed listening to country music and watching old Western movies on television. Al deeply loved his family as well as his cats.
Al is survived by his wife, Glenda (Schell) Piel; his children, Michael (companion, Clynda White), Jeffery Piel (companion, Tonya Perkins), Paul Hacker and Rita Hacker; his grandchildren, Jeffery Piel, Jr., Charles Piel, Nicholas Hacker and Shyanne Hacker; his great-grandchildren, Raelyn Piel and Cameron Dilg; his siblings, Edith Parks and George (Toni) Piel as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am, Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood, with Pastor Tim Pender, Sr., officiating. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens where a contingent from the United States Army and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Military Honor Guard will confer military honors.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the funeral home.
