Anne Applegate Wolfe Bedan, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on February 23, 2022 due to a recent illness. She was surrounded by family and friends
who dearly loved her.
Anne was born in Culver, California on March 21, 1935. She was raised in
Jeffersonville, Indiana, and spent summer months with paternal grandparents in Vincennes, Indiana and maternal grandparents in Washington, Indiana. She graduated from Saint Augustine School and Church and Jeffersonville High School
in southern Indiana. As a member of the Drama Club, she performed in junior and senior plays. Glee Club, Choral Club, Pep Club, GAA (Girls Athletic Association), and Tri-Hi-
Y were other extracurricular activities in which Anne was involved at school. In addition, she was editor of Jeffersonville High School newspaper, The Hyphen. After high school, she graduated from Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri, majoring
in fashion design and fine arts in 1955.
Later in 1955, Anne was named Miss Clark Co.- Queen, Miss Jeffersonville at the 7th annual Jaycee Fair, Junior Chamber of Commerce. She and her friends founded the AMICIS club, which means friends in Latin.
Throughout Anne's life, she took great pleasure in her relationships and friendships throughout the community and with her extended family in Jeffersonville and Louisville.
In 1956, Anne married her high school sweetheart Jack Bedan, Sr. Soon they grew a family which included three sons and a daughter. Throughout their children's lives, Anne was incredibly supportive of her children in their activities and education and aided in
developing the foundation for their faith. Anne and family moved to Bargersville, Indiana in 1957. Anne and family became parishioners at Our Lady of the Greenwood Church and School. Eventually, they moved
to White River Township, close to Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Indiana.
Anne began her career as a grade-school teacher, teaching second and third grade at Saint Jude School in Indianapolis. Anne's professional teaching career lasted 15 years at Saint Jude School. She left prematurely to support her son, who was paralyzed while playing
football.
Anne was also involved with various philanthropic groups such as the Knights of Columbus Women's Auxiliary and service sorority Lambda Chi Omega. In addition, Anne and her husband Jack were parishioners at the newly formed Saint Francis and Clare parish in Greenwood, Indiana.
After Anne's children were in college or starting their careers, she and her husband Jack began to travel by taking a trip to Europe and then traveling to various regions of the United States. However, their passion was to take long drives to Southern Indiana or the
neighboring Great Lakes States. Sometimes they would unexpectedly show up at one of their children's college campuses to join in college life.
After Anne's grandchildren arrived on the scene, many of her activities soon became subordinate to help look after the grandchildren. She took great pleasure in helping and establishing a relationship with her daughter-in-law. Anne and her husband Jack would
also follow and attend most of the grandchildren's activities. She was so happy to be intertwined in their lives. Since the arrival of her great-grandchildren a few years ago, her joy has been compounded. Anne's face always lit up when her "babies" walked in the room and when hearing of their latest activities.
Anne was a great cook and enjoyed hosting her family and friends at home and Louisville. She also had a great group of lifelong friends who, on many occasions, got together to play cards, not to mention on many holidays, a euchre game would cap the day. In addition, Anne loved her flower garden, in which she found much joy. Eventually, when she was unable to do the gardening herself, she enlisted the help of her children or her grandchildren.
Anne was also a person of faith; she took the reins in educating her children and family in the Catholic faith. She took great interest in what was taught at Our Lady of Greenwood; therefore, she served on the parish school board.
She was a follower of the Virgin Mary, and on several occasions, she and Jack would attend Medjugorje conferences at Notre Dame to see the visionaries from Yugoslavia. They even traveled to Kentucky on the rumor that a holy vision was at a parish in Cold Springs, Kentucky.
Survivors include her husband Jack Bedan, Sr., sons Jack Bedan, Jr., (Bettie), Kevin Bedan, and Gregory Bedan, daughter Kathryn Bedan, grandchildren John Bedan (Amber), Hannah Hoekzema (Matthew), and Jordan Bedan (Jenny), great-grandchildren Theodore Hoekzema and Franklin Hoekzema. Surviving relatives include siblings Carol Lee Woods, Lynne Rude, Jan McKnew, and cousin Kathleen Harris. Anne was preceded in death by her mother Mildred Reister Wolfe Applegate, father
Glenn Wolfe, stepfather Kenneth Applegate, Sr., and brothers Kenneth Applegate, Jr. and Robert Applegate.
Anne will be tremendously missed by her family, friends, and parish.
