Bayard Clay Fulmer, 91, passed away on March 10, 2012, at Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin, Indiana. Born May 19, 1920, in Bargersville, Indiana, he was the son of Lester Carl and Flora Jane (Plummer) Fulmer. A resident of Johnson County his entire life, Bayard was a 1938 graduate of Center Grove High School. He enlisted in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor and served his country during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Portland as a gunner''s mate from 1941 - 1945. Two weeks after an honorable discharge, he went back to Johnson County, returned to farming, and married Helen Aileen "Babe" Afflerbach on November 25, 1945. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2002, after 56 years of marriage.
Over the years, Bayard enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards, traveling, attending Navy reunions, and spending the winters in Ft. Myers, Florida. He was a devoted sports fan, especially Purdue. However, nothing was more important to Bayard than his family, his pictures and memories of his farm, and his service to his country while in the Navy. Bayard was a member of the Bluff Creek Christian Church and the Indiana Masonic Grand Lodge of Greenwood. A man of integrity, Bayard will be missed.
Survivors include two sons, Mark (Wells Richardson) Fulmer of Indianapolis and Richard (Jan) Fulmer of New Palestine; one daughter, Barbara (Jim) Dunn of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Eric (Jocelyn) Fulmer, Gregory (Liz) Fulmer, Karen (Kevin)Biehle, Joanna Dunn; one great-grandchild due in March; and three brothers, John (the late Vera) Fulmer, Merrill (Betty) Fulmer, and Jim (Phyllis) Fulmer.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Kyle Dunn.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 14, 2012, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood (317-535-9003). Funeral services with military honors will be held on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Bluff Creek Christian Church, 6286 W. State Road 144, Greenwood, IN 46143.
