Obituary

Betty Jean Hallam, 97, a life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on May 8th, 2023 in Marietta, Georgia.  The oldest of eleven children, she was born on September 3rd, 1925  to James B. and Mary Ellen (McNece) White. Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 59-years, Rex Albert Hallam, (2005), her mother, father, sisters Mary Alice Morical, Wanda Lee Taylor, Doris Ann Cory, Patricia Mae Paul , Barbara Sue Roby, Lois Margaret White, her brother, Robert A. White, and an infant grandson, Keith Allen Poland.


Betty is survived by her children Dennis (Anne) Hallam of Social Circle, Georgia, Beverly (Grant) Poland of Lizton, Indiana, Peggy (David) Skinner of Lafayette, Indiana, Larry Hallam of Lakeland, Florida, Rebecca (Steve) Heimbach of New Ross, Indiana, Thomas Hallam of Polk City, Florida, Lori Earley of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Lisa (Jim) Parrish of Marietta, Georgia, a stepson Rex (Mary Lu) Hallam of Largo, Florida, a brother James B. White of Campbellsville, KY, two sisters Helen Andrews of Indianapolis and  Judy Norris of Evansville, 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.


Betty, retired from St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Indiana.  While her health allowed, Betty was an active member of Thompson Road Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. In her youth, Betty could be found roller skating at Riverside Rink where she met Rex. Betty kept her mind sharp completing crossword puzzles and working word searches.  Weeknights at seven, Betty could be found watching Wheel of Fortune followed by Jeopardy. She enjoyed listening to Alan Jackson's Gospel music on her Alexa.  She loved to read her Bible, which is filled with many notes.  Betty filled her days by playing Bingo, singing, attending socials. manicures, hair appointments, and visiting with friends and family, which brought her the greatest joy; along with the occasional indulgence of a bowl of ice cream or a "cinnamon fries" donut from Long's Bakery.


Visitation for Betty will take place on Friday May 19, 2023 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home & Memory Gardens located at 1977 SR-135 S in Greenwood, Indiana. Services at 1:00pm and interment will follow at 2:00pm at Forest Lawn Memory Garden. Officiants for the services will be Pastor Joel Stevenson and Pastor Anthony Slutz.
