Carl D. McCombs passed away on May 30, 2007. Born in Indianapolis on February 8, 1921, he was the second of nine children born to Guy L. and Naomi E. McCombs. As a George Washington High School student in the mid-1930s Mr. McCombs enrolled in the school''s Reserve Officer Training Corps unit, an act the would profoundly affect his life and career. After enlisting in the Marine Cops Reserve on May 27, 1937, he was called to active duty in San Diego, California with his local reserve unit, the 16th Infantry Battalion, on November 10, 1940. Following his honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal on May 28, 1941, he returned to Indianapolis. On December 8, 1941, just one day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. McCombs and his fianc, Grace L. Davis, were married in Indianapolis. He then re-enlisted in the Marine Corps, returned to active duty in California and was promoted to Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant before being accepted to Officers Training School in Quantico, Virginia. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on August 10, 1943, he completed additional training in Virginia, North Carolina and at Ohio State University. He then commanded USMC anti-aircraft units on Midway Island and Tinian Island in the South Pacific. Following the war, Mr. McCombs returned to Indianapolis but continued his military service as a Marine reservist, helping reorganize the 16th Infantry Battolion and remaining with the unit until 1950. He again joined the unit in 1952 and was directed by Headquarters United Stated Marine Corps to form the 2nd 90mm AAA Gun Battalion (later the 75mm AAA Battalion), USMC Reserve. After a 26-year military career he retired from the Marine Corps Reserve with the rank of Major. He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, rank of Major. He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, the Marine Corps Association, the Marine Corps League, the 2nd Marine Division Association, the Marine Corps Mustang Association, the 16th Infantry Battalion Association and the American Legion. Trained as a printer at George Washington High School and through the National Youth Association, Mr. McCombs worked with several printing firms before beginning a thirty-year career with The Indianapolis Star and News in 1955. A 58-year member of the International Typographical Union, he served as Chairman of the union''s Star-news composing room chapel and as its delegate to the 1975 ITU National Convention. He retired in 1985. Mr. McCombs was preceded in death by Grace, his wife of 58 years, in 2000, and by his brothers Ralph and Gene. He was a member of Edgewood United Methodist Church for 50 years. He was also an active member of the George Washington High School Fifty-Year club, serving as its President in 1991, and of the Old-Time Printers Association of Indianapolis, of which he served as President for 15 years. He was an 18-year member of the Continental Dance Club, a member of its Board of Directors in 1990-91, and its "Member of the Year" in 1995 Mr. McCombs is survived by his daughter Janice McCombs Stewart (Bill), son Dan McCombs (Mi-Sun), granddaughter Lisa Grahm, sisters Alice Daniel (Lee), Ruth Ann Viles, June Richards (Paul) and Ann Border (David), Brothers Jack McCombs (June) and Harry McCombs (Lois), and his companion of the past five years, Wanda Strange. Visitation will be held Friday, June 8, between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, Greenwood, with funeral services following on Saturday, June 9 at 11:00a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marine Corps League, Hiram I.
