Carolyn Ann Giltner Wininger, 78, born on July 29, 1947, peacefully passed away at Franciscan Hospice House on July 10, 2026. Born to Elmer Gale Giltner and Mary Elizabeth Wood in Madison, Indiana, Carol (as she was known by her friends) grew up on a farm near New Washington, Indiana where she graduated from New Washington High School in the Class of 1965.
Carol received her Bachelor’s Degree from Indiana State University and a Master’s Degree from Indiana University in elementary education. In 1969 she started her career teaching second graders at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School. The faculty and staff nominated her for the Teacher of the Year award which she received in 1989 - 90. In 2002 the Metropolitan School District of Perry Township presented Carol an Award of Merit in grateful appreciation for 33 years of outstanding service.
Carol married her loving husband Jack in 1980. They spent 46 wonderful years together.
The joys of Carol’s life were going out to dinner, traveling, exercise classes, and spending time in Punta Gorda, Florida. She and Jack built their current home together in Greenwood, Indiana.
She is survived by her loving husband Jack; stepdaughter Brittany (Glenn) Kiser and grandchildren, Braxton and Sofia of Zionsville, IN; three sisters, Judy Jackson of New Albany, IN, Marilyn Read, of Shoals, IN, and Ethel (Dennis) McConduit of Cedar Hill, TX. She had numerous nieces and nephews and close friends.
Carol’s legacy will be remembered by all the children whose lives she touched. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
A visitation is Thursday, July 16, 2026 from 2;00 pm until the time of service at Forest Lawn Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 4:00 PM at the funeral home. Carol will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, July 17, 2026.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request donations to Riley Hospital for Children or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
