Obituary

Mrs. Carole Joann (Phelps) Tanner, Greenwood, Indiana, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2023. She was 59. Carole was born
October 28, 1963, in Richmond, Indiana, to the late Joseph Phelps and Anna (Hummel) Maples.
Carole graduated from Richmond High School and earned her bachelor's degrees from Franklin College, triple-majoring in
Economics, Management and Accounting. At Franklin, she was a member of the Tri Delta sorority, serving as chapter president and
living true to the Tri Delta motto "Let us steadfastly love one another" with those she met throughout her life.
In 1987, Carole married her high school and college sweetheart, Scott Tanner. Spending the first 15 years of her career in the
financial industry, she rose to upper management roles at Columbus Bank and Trust, KeyBank and Oxford Financial Group.
While working full time, she went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Process Engineering from Indiana University Purdue
University Indianapolis and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University.
Overachievers that Carole and Scott were, the partners in marriage became partners in business when they established
Tanner Law Group in 2004, specializing in community associations. Carole served as Director of Professional Services
until the firm was sold to Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit a year after Scott's passing in 2019. With the new firm, Carole took on the role of
Client Experience Director.
As accomplished as she was professionally, Carole never got so busy making a living that she forgot to make a life. The white-hot
light of her life was her children, Madeline Paige Tanner and McKeon Drake Tanner. No parents were prouder than Carole and
Scott, happily attending, volunteering and cheering at every event and milestone, from show choir performances and soccer games
to graduations.
She was fierce yet kind, strong yet compassionate. Carole was warm, wise and wickedly funny. An inspirational force to be
reckoned with, she not only survived but thrived despite major health challenges in recent years, all with her signature positive
spirit and high-wattage smile. Of all the titles she held - president, executive, friend, volunteer, survivor - the ones that meant the most to her were wife and mom.
She enjoyed crafting and cooking as well as reading and listening to podcasts that inspired her. Carole loved traveling and
vacationing with her family at the beaches of Seabrook Island, South Carolina, one of her favorite places. As a kidney transplant
recipient, she was a passionate supporter of the Indiana Donor Network.
Carole is survived by her children, Madeline and McKeon; her mother, Anna Maples; her mother-in-law, Sue Tanner; her
stepsiblings, Linda Wolski, Lois Antley, John Maples and Janice Shaver; as well as dear friends whom she loved as family.
In addition to her father and husband, Carole is preceded in passing by her stepfather, Lester Maples.
