Charles Robert McQuigg (Mac), 93, passed away at his home in Avon, IN, with his family at his side, on Sunday November 14, 2010.
Charles Robert McQuigg, also known as Mac, is one of six children born to Elsie (Timm) and Turlington McQuigg of Grant City, Mo. Mac married Marjory L. Smith of Beech Grove, IN, in 1950. Mac is survived by his son, Donald, daughter-in-law, Cynthia, two grand daughters, three great grand daughters, sister Eula Jean Welty, of St. Joseph, MO, and brother T.C.McQuigg Jr., of Westminster, MD. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Janis, first wife Marjory, second wife Jean (Robertson), and sisters Rachael Campbell, Ruby Edwards, and Pearl Chicken.
Mac was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran (1936-1945) and Purple Heart recipient. Mac served as a Chief Petty Officer and Chief Fire Control man aboard the USS Quincy CA-39 during the Battle of Savo Island-Guadalcanal campaign and the USS Killen and USS Phoenix during the Battle of Surigao Straights and Battle of Leyte Gulf Asia-Pacific campaign. Mac received his Purple Heart from the early morning sinking of the USS Quincy by the Japanese fleet. Mac retired from WTHR Channel 13 as a broadcast engineer in 1985. He enjoyed being a Ham radio operator until it was put aside for conducting genealogy research. Mac loved his country and his family. He also loved birds, his dog Snowball and his cat Queenie. Mac will be missed, but not forgotten.
