Clyde William "Bill" Shives passed away on February 7, 2019, at the
age of 95. Bill was born on September 6, 1923, at Summer Shade,
Kentucky, to John and Lorena (Franklin) Shives. He was the youngest of
17 children who all predeceased him.
Bill was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army in the Asiatic-
Pacific Theatre, where he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre
medal with two bronze stars and the Good Conduct medal. He was also a
recipient of the World War II Victory Medal.
Preceding Bill in death was his wife of 57 years, Lora (Henson)
Shives, and two children, Steven Shives and Rosemarie (Shives) Baker.
He was also preceded in death by a special friend, Phoebe Allen.
Bill is survived by his daughter Nancy (John) Duell (Indianapolis), as
well as five grandchildren: John Scott Duell (Indianapolis), Todd W.
Duell (Sodus, MI), Kristopher "KC" (Laura) Baker (Indianapolis),
Carrie (Jeff) Woodcock (Sheridan), and Jacqueline (Ryan) Newton
(Portland, OR). Bill leaves behind ten great-grandchildren and many
nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special friend Pat Sledge
(Bargersville).
Bill worked at Eli Lilly, retiring in 1979. After retiring he enjoyed
real estate investing, building his own homes and working in his
flower and vegetable gardens, a hobby he enjoyed well into his
nineties. He also enjoyed music and played guitar, banjo, dobro,
harmonica and mandolin.
Friends may call on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Forest Lawn Funeral
Home, 1977 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, IN, from 1:00 until 2:00pm,
with a funeral service at 2:00pm. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory
Gardens immediately following the service. Memorial contributions in
his honor may be made to St. Vincent Hospice, the Indianapolis Humane
Society, the American Cancer Society, or to a charity of the donor's
