Obituary

Darlene Sue (Puckett) Barnell Greenwood, IN, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026. She was 87 years old. Darlene was born in Portland, IN, to her parents Paul and Mabel Puckett. She graduated from Indiana University with a degree in education. Darlene married her husband, Robert Barnell, on August 20, 1960, and they shared almost 40 years of marriage together.

Darlene served her family as a homemaker while her children were young. Later, she entered the workforce as a pre-school teacher. Darlene passionately taught her students and ultimately retired after 18 years of service. Darlene had a personal relationship with God and took comfort in reading the Bible during difficult times. Darlene loved traveling. She was able to take each of her grandchildren on trips to celebrate milestones in their lives like their fifth grade and college graduations. She loved to tour European countries to see the sights and enjoy the culture. Darlene also enjoyed several cruises alongside her daughters. Some of her favorite trips included visiting Italy and the British Isles. Darlene inspired her family’s wanderlust and adventurous spirit. Darlene was a lifelong dog lover and even amassed a collection of various dog figurines to display and enjoy. Darlene was also an avid reader; James Patterson’s novels were always her favorite. She had a very creative spirit which manifested in her participation in the local choir and writing poetry. She will be remembered for her steadfast nature, generosity, and loving spirit.

Darlene is survived by her children, Stasia Bennie, and Kevra (Rob) Finkelstein; her grandchildren, James (Amanda) Bennie, Andrew (Emily) Bennie, Kaitlyn (Brad) Fletcher, and Ryan (Leya) Finkelstein; her great grandchildren, Riley, Mackenzie, Derrick, and Austin.

Darlene is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her significant other, Leon Herald; her son-in-law, Jim Bennie; her beloved Yorkie, Barney.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date
