Obituary

Mr. Dennis Michael Devitt, 70, of Martinsville, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, December 12, 2024. Dennis was born on April 19, 1954, in Springfield, Illinois, the son of the late Joseph Anthony and Mary Catherine (Combs) Devitt.
Dennis grew up in Southport and graduated from Southport High School in 1972. Over the years, he pursued various careers but was best known for his work in the automobile industry, where his vibrant personality and dedication earned him many friends and loyal customers.
A lover of the outdoors, Dennis enjoyed an adventurous life, living in Bloomington, Arizona, and California. He worked as a camp host, a role that perfectly suited his passion for nature and meeting new people. He particularly cherished his time boating on Lake Monroe, strumming his guitar, and listening to the music of Paul Simon and Pink Floyd. His later years were filled with simple joys—sitting outside, feeding the squirrels, and sharing laughter with his beloved family. Known for his love of tie-dye clothing and his constant humor, Dennis had an incredible gift for brightening the lives of those around him.
Dennis's greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his children, Katherine Hoffman, Bridget (Josh Baugh) Devitt, Charlotte (Cody) Moat, and Mary Devitt; his grandchildren, Rator Hoffman, Henry Hoffman, Jett Hoffman, Addison Devitt, Riley Baugh, Payton Baugh, Harper Coker, Cody Moat Jr., and Claire Moat; and his siblings, Nancy Grammes, Sue (David) Sowder, Sarah (Russ) Glassburn, Tracy (Mark) Finke, and Mary Jo (Shelly Hubbard) Burton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by his siblings, Thomas Devitt and Colleen "Cokie" Klieber.
Per his wishes, no formal services are planned at this time. Dennis's family encourages everyone who knew him to honor his memory by sharing a smile, feeding a squirrel, or enjoying their favorite music—just as he would have wanted.
Dennis will be fondly remembered for his laughter, inappropriate behavior, and the countless memories he created with those who loved him.
