IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy "Dotty"
Lee Mackean
October 9, 1929 – August 28, 2025
Dorothy "Dotty" Lee [Smith] MacKean passed away peacefully at her home on August 28, 2025, just a few weeks shy of her 96th birthday. She was born on October 9, 1929, in Portsmouth, Virginia, the youngest of four daughters to Hazel Amelia Smith. Dotty's story began with hardship — her father passed away before she was born, and her mother when she was only 10 — but she grew up strong, resilient, and more than a little feisty, moving to New York City at a young age to live with relatives.
After World War II, Dotty met the love of her life, Thomas MacKean. The two were married on April 3, 1948, and built a beautiful life together — raising twin daughters, moving from Indiana to Florida and back again, and making lifelong friends along the way.
Dotty will be remembered as a woman of faith, strength, and humor. She was firmly grounded in Christ, quick to offer support, and never one to back down from a challenge. Whether it was mastering Nintendo games like Tetris and Dr. Mario long before her grandchildren could, or absolutely obliterating family members in Euchre (with no apologies and plenty of laughter), Dotty played to win — and usually did. When she wasn't busy being undefeated, she was in the kitchen. Dotty was a devoted baker of cookies and made sure no one ever left her home hungry.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra Lee [MacKean] McDonald and Denise Ann MacKean; her grandson, Thomas Robert Yelton; her granddaughter, Adrien Lee McDonald; her two great-grandchildren; and her sister, Hazel [Smith] Reinecke. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas, and her sisters, Ola Mae [Smith] Essick and Bettie Ann [Smith] MacKean.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 15, at 3:00 p.m. at Fair Haven Christian Church, 1476 W 300 S, Franklin, IN 46131. In honor of Dotty's long membership there, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church to celebrate her faith and the joy she brought to so many.
Her family is comforted knowing she's in heaven — hopefully still undefeated in Euchre.
