Mrs. Dorothy Mae Russler, Greenwood, passed away on the evening of Friday, November 27, 2020. She was 99. Dorothy was born January 20, 1921 in Beech Grove, Kentucky a daughter of the late Dowell Emerson and Ada Lee (Porter) Thompson.
Dorothy was the last surviving member of the graduating Class of 1939 of Newburgh (IN) High School and was also a graduate of the Lockyear Business College in 1940. Many years ago, Dorothy was one of the first waitresses hired at the Fireside Restaurant in Indianapolis and worked there from 1955 to 1965. She then moved on to Stewart Warner Manufacturing Company for five years and then accepted what she always said was her favorite position at the Indiana Convention Center where she retired in 2010 after 30 years of service.
Dorothy was a member of the Southport Presbyterian Church as well as the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter in Southport. In her leisure time, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, Ray, and was a member of the Holiday Ramblers RV group and participated in several caravans over the years. She also enjoyed playing golf, gardening and yard work and square dancing with Ray. Dorothy was a champion Bridge player and never passed an opportunity to play. She was well known for her baking skills, especially her cookies and had also crafted 18 hand-made quilts! She deeply loved her family and cherished the time she could spend with them.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Steven (Cheryl) Russler and Janet Russler; her grandchildren, Lance (Misty) Apgar, Aaron (Sarah) Russler and Amy (Andy) Freeman; seven great-grandchildren, Kaelyn, Averie, Quinn and Hudson Russler, Zane Apgar and Bailey and Allie Freeman as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in passing by her beloved husband Raymond H. Russler in 1996 and her sisters, Frances Downen and Jean Chandler.
Private funeral services will be conducted with entombment following at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
