Obituary

Douglas David Hume, 95, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on July 8, 2027.

Doug was born in Pike County, Ind. on October 5, 1930 to the late Charles Oscar and Golden (Wade) Hume. Doug married Betty (Heldman) Hume on June 30, 1956. Together, they raised their four children in central Indiana.

He is survived by his children Mary (Ralph) Utt, Pamela (David) Hume-Engle, Fay (Chris) Etter and Mark Hume; grandchildren, Paula (Utt) Stringer, Stephanie (Utt) Rife, Katie (Engle) Burrell, Dillon Etter, Julie Engle and Dexter Etter; great-grandchildren, Kevin Padgett, Joseph Hall, Kasey Rife, Clayton Rife, Wyatt Burrell, Elliott Burrell, Crosby Schmitt and Cora Everhart; and 4 great-great grandchildren; and cat, Pete. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Prentice “Deacon” and Fredrick; sister, Margaret; and wife, Betty.

Doug served as a radioman second class in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Later, he attended Oakland City College and completed his master’s degree in education at Indiana University. During his 31-year career, he taught 4th, 5th and 6th grades, as well as high school classes in Lebanon, Columbus, Perry Township and IPS schools 72 and 34.

When he wasn’t teaching, Doug enjoyed bowling, golfing, participating in Special Olympics with Mark, and the company of friends and family. He also loved spending time in his garden and was well-known for keeping himself busy. He had a thirst for knowledge and passion for history, carrying that drive well into his later years when he almost always had his nose in a book or newspaper.

During retirement, Doug found a new calling - dedicating his spare time and energy to his grandchildren. He devoted countless hours of quality time, taking care of them with Betty on weekdays and school holidays.

Doug’s legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, with whom he passed along his generous spirit, strong-will and commitment to social equity.

Join his family as we celebrate his life on Wednesday, July 15 from 10 am ET to noon at Forrest Lawn. Services will follow at noon.
