E.J. "Barney" Monroe, age 86 of Greenfield, died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Brandywine Nursing Home in Greenfield. He was born March 24, 1923 in Hickory Flat, Mississippi to George Lee and Ina (Johnston) Monroe. Barney was married June 10, 1946 to Willodean Massingill who passed away in 1997. Barney retired from American Standard after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Lynnhurst Masonic Lodge 723 and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1945. Barney loved his horses and his Border Collie Katie. He is survived by one son, Joe (Kathleen) Monroe; one daughter Kay Noble; He had 8 Grandchildren, Heather Pastorius, Josh Monroe, Lisa Brugh, Jennifer Spencer, John Noble, Stacey Monroe and Christopher Monroe, David Merlau and 10 Great-Grandchildren. Barney was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son David Lee Monroe, 4 brothers, Harm, Leon, Neal and T.F. Monroe and one sister Lois Blair. Visitation will be from 4-8 Friday June 19, 2009 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home at 1977 S. State Road 135 Greenwood, IN 46143. Services will be 1:00pm at the funeral home.
