Obituary

Ms. Ellen Roberta Powell, Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2026. She was 80 years old. Ellen was born May 23, 1945, in Beech Grove, Indiana, a daughter of the late Burr Francis and Catherine Clara (Ralston) Powell.

Ellen attended Thomas Carr Howe High School and was a member of the graduating class of 1964. Throughout her life, she held several positions of employment and most recently worked in the delicatessen at Meijer, where she enjoyed serving and visiting with customers and coworkers alike.

Ellen treasured the friendships she shared with her beloved “Knitwits Group” of ladies, who regularly gathered to visit, share meals, and play games together. She also took pride in volunteering to help keep her neighborhood streets clean and cared deeply about her community.

She enjoyed many simple pleasures in life. Ellen loved reading, especially books about the Amish and their way of life. She found joy in music and singing, watching television, and spending time outdoors tending to her yard and garden. She had a special love for animals, particularly cats, and her faithful companion, Pinkie, held a very special place in her heart.

Ellen was a devoted member of GracePoint Church, where she faithfully assisted in the preparation of communion. One of her greatest joys was listening to the church choir sing.

She is survived by her sister, Emily and Paul Walk; her niece, Kathy Martin; her nephews, Chris Hill and Danny Hill; and her beloved cat, Pinkie.

In addition to her parents, Ellen is preceded in passing by her sister, Clara Hill and an infant brother.

A celebration of Ellen’s life will take place at GracePoint Church, 330 West Whiteland Road, Whiteland, Indiana, with the date and time to be announced once finalized.

For those choosing to make a memorial contribution, the family has suggested those be offered to GracePoint Church, Whiteland.
