Elmer L. Hensley, Lafayette, IN, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. He was 99 years old. Elmer was born in Indianapolis, IN to his parents Joseph and Gladys Hensley. Elmer enlisted in the United States Military in 1943 and served in WWII under the Army Air Corps, later renamed the Air Force. Elmer went on to continue his military career for 31 more years until 1974 when he was honorably discharged as a fully retired Air Force veteran with the rank of Master Sergeant. Elmer married his wife, Rosina "Rosi" (Berghammer) Hensley on September 28, 1953 and they shared 58 years of marriage together until Rosi passed away on January 11, 2011.
Elmer worked as an assembly worker for the Indianapolis Chrysler Corporation and retired in 1986 after 19 years of service. Elmer was a lifelong Christian who most recently was a member of Rosedale United Methodist Church for many years. Elmer was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion throughout his life. Elmer enjoyed bowling with his wife, Rosi, in various bowling leagues. He was a lifelong fisherman with his friends and family. Elmer loved to send cards to his friends and family to celebrate every holiday under the sun. His generous and family oriented nature made him a pleasure to be around. The memories created will now be cherished by those he leaves behind.
Elmer is survived by his son, Larry (Beth) Hensley; his grandchild, Karen (Eben) True; his great grandchildren, Isaiah, Samuel, and Naomi True; his siblings, Joy Helms and Bill Hobbs; his several nieces and nephews.
Elmer is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rosi; his 8 other siblings.
A visitation for Elmer will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 S Sr 135, Greenwood IN, 46143, from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. The funeral service will be on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 11:00 am. Burial will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens at 12:00 pm.
