Obituary

Frederick Michael Powers passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 12, 2023.  He was born to Alice Lucille Hawley John in New Castle, Indiana on August 23, 1943.  After a short time at Ball State University, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Vietnam from June of 1964 through March of 1968 as part of the Army Security Agency.  He returned to Ball State after his time in the military and received a BS in Marketing.  Throughout his career, he was a phenomenal salesman.  He loved to travel for work and meet new clients.
He married Carol Ann (Buchanan) Powers on July 4th, 1970 and they were married over 50 years.  They had two children, Nancy Abigail (Powers) Crimmins and Charles Frederick Powers.  The family spent most of their time in Morristown, Indiana where Fred could be found working in his massive garden or cheering on his children from sports courts and fields.
Fred and Carol had 6 grandchildren (Sidney Abigail Powers, Seth Michael Powers, Anna Beatrice Crimmins, Jaida Kade Green, Molly Caroline Crimmins, and Tate Filebar Crimmins).  He made sure Carol, who had many health issues, could live at home with him until her death in June of 2022.  He is survived by his two step-brothers, William (Peggy) John and Gary (Cinderella) John, who were not only his brothers, but best friends.  He had other best friends who became family to all of us.  It isn't traditional to put these names in an obituary, but you know who you are and how much he loved you.
Anyone who knew Fred Powers has one or two or five good stories about Fred Powers.  He never met a stranger, made everyone laugh, and loved adventure.  Sometimes he would make up words, but he would always say them with confidence.  He enjoyed playing poker, cards, and the stock market.  He preferred to wear brightly colored clothing and wasn't too concerned if things matched.  We smile knowing he was wearing a highlighter-yellow zip up when he passed away.
There will not be formal services for Fred, but we will have a celebration of life for him sometime in the future.  In lieu of flowers, call up a friend you haven't seen in awhile and buy them a good meal with drinks or have a long phone conversation.  Fred believed in building relationships. If you feel so moved, donations can be made to any Parkinson's Disease charity of your choosing.
