Obituary

Garvin L. Sommers 88, of Greenwood, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026. He was born November 17, 1937 in Beech Grove, Indiana to the late Floyd O. Sommers and Helen (Good) Sommers.

Garvin was a graduate of Manual High School and Arsenal Technical. He was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Garvin married Leora June Micks October 7, 1960. She preceded him in death May 8, 2011.

Garvin is survived by his children, Lisa K, Lynnae D., and Garvin Jeffrey (Rhonda); 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren (28th on the way) and a sister, Patricia J. Hilarides, preceded him in death.

Garvin was a Shop Chief in the Indiana Army National Guard for 43 years, retiring at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5. He enlisted in 1954, retired from active duty on September 22, 1995, served in the Reserves for two additional years and was honorably discharged on November 30, 1997. He was involved in the Ceremonial Unit and was Commander of the unit for many years. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash. This is an honorary award given by the Governor of Indiana to individuals who have made significant contributions to the state. It is one of Indiana's highest honors.

Garvin enjoyed bowling, being a part of league bowling for over 70 years.

Visitation will be on Monday, March 23, 2026 from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, IN 46143 A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens with full military honors.
