IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George William
Vernon
February 13, 1941 – April 19, 2022
Mr. George William 'GW' Vernon, Greenwood,
passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 19, 2022. He was 80. George was
born February 13, 1942 in Trenton,
Tennessee, a son of the late
Vergil Nelson Vernon and Dimple (Dunahoo) Matheny.
GW attended Arsenal Technical
High School and was a member
of the graduating Class of 1960. GW honorably and proudly served his country with
the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of
the Greenwood American Legion.
GW was employed at Ford Motor
Company in production and retired in 2007 after 42 years of service. He was a
member of the Greenwood Lodge No. 514, F&AM as well as the Murat Shrine. He
enjoyed traveling and was an avid golfer and bowler. For many years, he
participated in the bowling leagues with his friends at Ford. He also enjoyed
the Indianapolis
500 and attended every race from 1957 until 2017, a total of 50 races. GW will
be remembered for his friendly smile. He loved to tell a good joke and never
met a stranger,
GW is survived by his
children, Michael Vernon and Cassondra Vernon; his grandson, Cody Vernon; his
siblings, Charlotte Baird, Jerry Vernon, Kelly Matheny and Susie Archibald as
well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to parents, he is
preceded in passing by his step-mother, Pearl Vernon; his sister, Donna Brumett
and his brother-in-law, Bernie Brumett.
A Celebration of Life gathering
will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Saturday, April 30, 2022 at Smock Golf
Course, 3910 East County Line Road
in Greenwood. Inurnment
will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
