Obituary

Mrs. Gladys Gearlds, 88, a longtime resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, who most recently made her home in Ormond Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, April 21, 2026 She was born in Hazard, Kentucky, to the late Roy and Eva (Pratt) Halcomb. Gladys was proud of her roots and often spoke fondly of being a coal miner’s daughter—a testament to the strength and resilience that defined her life. She later moved to Indianapolis, where she met the love of her life, Frank. They shared 66 devoted years of marriage, a bond defined by love family and commitment. He preceded her in death in 2024. Gladys is survived by her only son, Rick, and his wife, Sandy, whom she considered the daughter she never had. She also leaves behind her cherished granddaughters, Kassandra (Jess) Chadwell and Kristin McGuire. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Amber McGuire. Affectionately known as “GG,” Gladys found her greatest joy in her great-grandchildren: Daniel, Alayna, Phoenix, Vance, Zola, and Marlowe. She treasured every moment spent with them, whether during time together in Indiana or in the past few years when they made special trips to visit her and fill her Florida home with laughter and love. Family was the heart of Gladys’s life. One of eleven siblings, she looked forward to the lively gatherings filled with food, playing cards, dancing and a lot of loud laughter. She is survived by her sisters, Shirley Elmore, Dorothy (Junior) McNulty, Mary Burgess, and Beulah (Guy) Barger, and her brother, Lundy Halcomb. She is preceded in death by her sister Allie (Halcomb) Suttles, and her brothers Clyde, Jesse, Jack and James Halcomb. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. To know Gladys was to witness true kindness. She had an open heart, a gentle spirit, and a quiet way of making everyone feel welcomed and deeply cared for. She cherished life’s simple moments and the people she shared them with. Her legacy of love, compassion, and family will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 pm, Wednesday, may 6, 2026 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of services at the funeral home.
