Helen V. Smith, age 91, of Indianapolis, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012 with her family at her side. She was born July 23, 1920 in Greenwood to Clarance and Sadie (Coulter) Elkins. She was a homemaker and accomplished seamstress who loved to spend time with her family. She married Melvin Smith in 1939. Helen loved to play piano and organ, which she taught herself to play. She was also a member of The Red Hat Society.
Helen is survived by her son, Marvin (Karen) Smith of Gosport; daughters, Beverly (Lewis) Glentzer of Franklin, Sandra (Keith ) Black of Bloomington, Barbara (Michael) Burdine of Franklin, Joyce (Douglas) Lowes of rural Falmouth and Connie Wiescamp of CO; brother Virgil Elkins of Mt. Juliet, TN; sisters, Margaret Thrall of Greenwood, Carolyn (John) Bogue of Shelbyville and Judy of Shelbyville; nine grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Victor and Earl; sisters, Faye, Opal, Betty, Elizabeth, Geneva and Lyda Mae; great grandson, Avery Lowes.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 1:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood with visitation from 11:00AM until service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
