Obituary

Mr. Ira Joe Brown, Indianapolis, passed from this life Tuesday, October 12, 2021. He was 89. Joe was born June 18, 1932 in Oak Grove, Tennessee, a son of the late Coy and Elizabeth 'Lizzie' (Simpson) Brown.

After graduating from Portland High School in Tennessee in 1951, Joe came to Indianapolis and acquired a job with the Statesman Insurance Company (previously State Auto). While there, he met Sue Myers, the love of his life. They married in 1958 and were the proud parents of a beautiful daughter, Sherrell.

Joe studied hard and earned his CPCU in 1979. He was the lead underwriter while at Statesman and was promoted to Supervisor of Personal Lines Underwriting. He retired after 30 plus years of service on June 18, 1992, his 60 th birthday.

Joe was able to enjoy working in his yard, tending to his flowers and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed traveling with his family and friends to many beautiful places. He will be remembered as a great husband, father, Gramps, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was a member of Southeastern Presbyterian Church in Wanamaker.

Joe is survived by his 'adopted by love' daughter, Julie Shaffer; his grandchildren, Joe (Kristi) Shaffer and Kelli Shaffer; his great-grandchilden, Braedyn and Brooklyn Shaffer; his sisters-in-law, Karen Myers and Carolyn Myers as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in passing by his beloved wife, Sue (Myers) Brown and his daughter, Sherrell Brown and a brother, JC Brown.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood, with Pastor Stan Glover officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 pm, Friday, October 29, 2021 at the funeral home.

For those choosing to make a memorial contribution, the family has suggested those be offered to Gleaners Food Bank or Riley Children's Hospital.
