James Thomas Carmichael, Jr., deceased on April 1, 2009, in Indianapolis, at the age of 80. James was husband to his surviving wife, Betty L. Carmichael (Bennett) for over 62 years and father to their sons Dennis (wife Kay), Patrick (wife Patricia), and Kevin (wife Jennifer). James was the proud and loving grandfather of seven grand-children (Dawn, Derek, Chris, Jeff, Kim, Joel, Danielle), and five great grand-children. James and his surviving brother Elmer Clayton were the sons of James T. Carmichael, Sr. and Lillian R Carmichael (Patton). Three step-brothers and two step-sisters predeceased James.
Calling is from 3:00-6:00 PM on Sunday, April 5, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 South State Road 135 in Greenwood, Indiana, 46143. Funeral services will be at noon on Monday, April 6 at the same location.
Jim Carmichael provided life-long leadership as a member of many civic and community organizations. He was a member of the Ben Davis Christian Church and was the recipient of many honorable recognition awards for Boy Scout leadership activities including the Silver Beaver, Wood Badge, Minisino rank in Firecrafter, Vigil rank in Order of the Arrow. He was honored by the Chapel Hill Lions Club as the Lion of the Year. The Lions International Foundation awarded him the Melvon Jones Fellow award. As an employee of Kroger he received the B.H. Kroger Award for Outstanding Community Service for his leadership in the Boy Scouts of America and for his basketball and football coaching activities for various youth organizations.
Mr. Carmichael was a retiree of the Kroger Company and during his semi-retirement worked for Wayne Township Schools.
