James C. Dillard 83, died peacefully on June 6, 2009 in Kindrid Hospital in Greenwood, IN. He was born June 18, 1925 in Richmond, VA to John Fredrick Dillard and Birtie (Brooks) Dillard, who preceded him in death. He was one of 14 children in his family of Laurel, VA. He served in the U.S. Army during and after World War II. He met his wife, Louise R. (Bott) Dillard, in Fulda, Germany, who preceded him in death in 2005 after 50 years of marriage. They lived in Germany and France and then moved to the U.S. in 1964. He retired from U.S. Army in 1965 with 20 years of service, a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and several other medals. After military service, he worked for James T. Kellie Plumbing Co. in Greenwood and retired from plumbing in 1990. He spent his free time gardening heirloom German tomatoes, laughing, fishing and hunting with friends, and helping to raise a family. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Paulson of Greenwood, Luise Hansel of Germany, five grandchildren, including Jennifer (Jackson) Keller, Steven Paulson, Hailey Paulson and two grandsons in Germany. He is also survived by four sisters, Nancy Simmons, Doris Agostinelli, Mary Evelyn Lawrence, and Ruby White all from Richmond, VA, and one brother, Franklin (Pete) Dillard of Scottsdale, AR. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 10, 2009 from 10 AM to noon at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood, IN, followed by a memorial service to begin at noon ending with his burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with military honors.
