Joan Bessie
Flanary
Nov 2, 1927 — Jun 3, 2021
Indianapolis
Bessie Joan "Joann" ( Clancy ) Flanary , born November 2, 1927 , in Indianapolis, IN., went home to be with the Lord on June 3 , 2021 , at the young age of 93.
Joan as she preferred to be called, leaves behind a daughter, Louann ( Flanary ) Sanders, a son-in-law, Steven, "Steve" Sanders, a granddaughter, Shelliann Ernst ing, and 3 great - grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews , and many friends.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Donald Flanary , grandson, Nicholas Brown, brother, James Clancy and parents, John Clancy, Edna (Koch) Clancy and , step-mother, Madge (Peters) Clancy.
In 1947, Joan Clancy married Don Flanary . When Don was called to serve in the military, Joan stayed living with her Aunts and Uncles until he found proper housing for the two of them and he would later send for her. He was stationed in Las Vegas and then in Florida. At this time, it was difficult for service men's wives to get jobs, due to the military moving the men around frequently, and sometimes with little notice . Ladies would get hired and trained and then suddenly would have to leave. The two of them lived in apartments off the military base, but after a few years , it proved to more and more difficult to get by on a service man's pay . T he two of them decided to move Joan back home and Don would join her after he was discharged from the Airforce . Don and Joan rented until 1956 when they bought a piece of property at 7555 Sandalwood Drive, where they built the home they would both live in for the rest of their lives.
Joan began working for Eli Lilly's on Kentucky Avenue until her life took a new direction, one fondly referred to by her as , motherhood. The year was 1959, Joan gave her notice and left Lillys , and assumed her role as a stay-at-home mom. A role that she exce l l ed at! Joan babysat for about 6 years , but would not work outside the home again until after her daughter graduated from high school in 1977 .
In 1978, Joan would re-enter the workforce. She started working
for Ray's IGA as a deli clerk on S. Meridian Street , she worked there for several years . She left her employment with IGA to take care of her husband, whose health was failing.
After Don's passing, Joan decided to again re-enter the workforce. She took a job at Kroger on SR 135 in Greenwood, IN., as a deli clerk, A few years later she would transfer to the Kroger on W. Southport Road , where she would eventually retire after 17 years of employment with the company , at the age of 87. If it hadn't been for her failing eyes and health she would have worked longer . She loved the people she worked with and many customers w ould come especially to see her when they were in the store shopping. Numerous times she spoke about how much she wished she could still work, she wanted to be busy and feel productive.
Many people after hearing of Joan's passing, have reached out to say how much she was loved and what an amazing, wonderful , lady she was. I agree, she was amazing, I was blessed to be, what she would call , one of the very best part s of her life for 61 years. I can honestly say, she was a wonderful lady , a very loving mother and , my best friend. I will miss her always.
