Obituary

Joe Dallas Bryant, Indianapolis, passed away on the early morning of Sunday, June 22, 2025. He was 87 years old. Joe liked to claim that he was born "in a bucket" in Hestand, KY to his parents Dewey and Dana Elaine Bryant. He attended Shortridge and Tech High School, then attended Indiana University for his bachelor's degree and later Purdue University for his master's degree. Joe married his wife, Anne (Norcross), in 1965 after passionately pursuing her for a period of six weeks, and they shared 60 years of marriage together.

Joe worked as an educator for School 34 of Indianapolis and retired after many dedicated years of service. He took pride in developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with his students for years after he had the honor of teaching them. Joe and his wife even had the opportunity to study the Chinese language and travel to China to study and teach during the summers. Joe and his wife brought back their Mandarin Chinese language skills to the US, and he was instrumental in creating the Chinese language program in the Indianapolis Public Schools. The title of the "Best Teacher Ever" would fit perfectly on Joe's trophy shelf.

Joe and his wife moved to a property on the south side of Indianapolis to the Center Grove area when he decided he was over the hustle and bustle of city life. There, Joe cultivated the property with gorgeous landscaping, a micro farm, chickens, beehives, and a forest full of hand planted trees. Joe loved to share his fresh vegetables with friends and family and earned the nickname "Farmer Joe" after years of consistent devotion to caring for his garden.

Joe thrived on having multiple projects to throw himself into; he could be described as an eccentric designer and a bargain hunter who loved to share the bargains with others. Joe enjoyed attending parties, following the operas and orchestras, and making perfect martinis for those closest to him. His outrageous and charismatic personality and loving nature will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind.

Joe is survived by his wife, Anne Bryant; his children, Rex (Jenny) Bryant and Kate (Billy) Mitchell; his siblings, Kenneth Bryant and Kathryn Valentine; his nieces and nephews, Sabrina Patterson, Diane (Mike) Palma, Nancy Valentine, Angela (Kent) Becker, Dana (Randy) Ellison, Lana Pattison, and John Pattison, Todd (Andrea) Norcross, Bethany (Tim) Zekveld, Christa (Andy) Cottingham, Allison Sipes and Becca (Scott) Bentzel; Sister and Brothers-in-law: Judy (Steve) Sipes, Don (Sandee) Norcross, Martha (George) Butler, Nancy (Frank) Gootee.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Gay Pattison; his brother-in-law, Frank Valentine.

A celebration of life will be held at The Homestead Room in the Sycamore at Mallow Run Winery (7070 West Whiteland Road, Bargersville, Indiana 46106) (317-530-6463) on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree, celebrating Joe's life, or sharing a heartwarming or outrageous memory of Joe on Facebook or in person at his party.
