Bohannon Jr.
December 17, 1928 – February 27, 2023
John P. Bohannon, Jr., 94, son of John P., Sr. and Alma Ruth (Roberts) Bohannon, passed away on February 27, 2023. He was born December 17, 1928, in West Newton, Indianapolis, Indiana. John was a long-time resident of Beech Grove, Indiana. In 2007, he was recognized by the City of Beech Grove as "Renaissance Man" and Citizen of the Year.
With his wife of 69 years, Mary, John toured all fifty states, every Canadian province, and explored the world including Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Central America. As a young adult John was a private pilot; later, sky-diving became a passion. He was an active softball league participant, a Little League Coach, and a Scoutmaster. He enjoyed fishing with family and friends both locally and in Canada. As a lap swimmer, he swam 2,000 miles. He was an avid motorcyclist, riding to the East Coast, West Coast and to Alaska. On several occasions he was a runner in the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.
John was employed by Western Electric for 35 years. Retiring from there, he worked for Beech Grove High School, Hornet Park Elementary, and South Grove Elementary as a custodian.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary E. (Pauley) Bohannon, a sister, Kathleen R. Spence and brothers, Othell R. Bohannon and Gary R. Bohannon, and son-in-law, Dr. Stephen Koehler.
John is survived by a sister, Sandra Hubbell, his children Glen (Jeanne) Bohannon of Indianapolis, Paul (Donna) Bohannon of Oakwood, Ohio, Kathleen (Thomas) Gilmore of New Palestine, and Sarah Koehler of Indianapolis. He was loved by his grandchildren Michael Gilmore, Kevin Bohannon, Jennifer (Matthew) Hlavsa, Joseph (Ashley) Beasley, Matthew (Molly) Gilmore, Sasha Bohannon, and Mason Gilmore. He was charmed by his great-grandchildren Colin, Rylee, Emma, Ziggy, Donovan, CiCi, Leo, Hunter, Maddie, Laura, and Gunner.
The family is grateful to the staff of Creekside Health and Rehabilitation Center, Indianapolis, for their conscientious care.
There will be a visitation in John's honor from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood on Friday, March 3, 2023. Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
