Mr. John Elwin Garmon Sr., Indianapolis, went Home to be with the Lord on the morning of Saturday, August 27, 2022. He was 81. John was born in Addison, Alabama, one of 10 children born to the late James Homer and Eula Gladys (Graves) Garmon.
John attended schools in Alabama and in 1955, at the age of 14, drove himself to Indiana. He began his 40 year trucking career shortly after his arrival in Indianapolis with Blue and White. After that, he was employed with Signal Delivery as a truck driver and retired in 1992 after over 25 years of service. He then was employed with Indianapolis Drum Company as a truck driver and retired a second time in 2006. He was an accomplished truck driver and had won a national championship at the National Truck Rodeo.
John was a founding member of the Indianapolis Baptist Tabernacle where he was involved in several areas of ministry. He had served as a deacon, in the bus ministry (where he assisted in the maintenance of the church buses) as well as Vacation Bible School. He also sang in a church quartet and in the choir. John truly had a servant's heart!
John enjoyed sports and played volleyball and softball into his 60's and had also served as a coach in youth sports.
John loved spending time with his family and enjoyed making memories while fishing and camping with them. He was a great husband and father and he would be the first to tell you his greatest accomplishment was his family. He loved them dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Gerda Garmon; his children, John (Kimberly) Garmon, Jacquelyn (Matt) Sutter, Jeffrey Garmon and Joseph (Holly) Garmon; his grandchildren, Sara, Paige, Tyler, Emily, Katelyn, Kaleb, Kyle, Tiffani, Becca, Cody, Miles, Bellany and Gracelyn; 11 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Virginia (Maury) Fowler, Van (Kathy) Garmon, Dean O'Connor and Barry Garmon as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in passing by his first wife, Lola Garmon and his siblings, J.D. Garmon, Robert Garmon, Hudson Garmon, Nell Kucejko and Evelyn Rigsby.
