John Gustav Markanich, Greenwood, IN, passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2026. He was 85 years old. John was born in Chicago, IL, to his parents John and Gertrude Markanich. John married his wife, Carole Crosby, in 1962, and they shared 64 years of marriage together.
John worked as an engineer for Sweetheart Cup Corporation for many years before his well-earned retirement. John also served his community as a volunteer fire fighter for Markham, IL, achieving the rank of Second Deputy Chief. John enjoyed participating in Revolutionary War Reenactments and was a member of the Northwest Territory Alliance for over 40 years. He was a lifelong history buff and enjoyed the comradery of the reenactments. John will be remembered for his jolly talkative nature. He was always quick with a joke, and his laugh was very contagious. John will be dearly missed and forever cherished by those he leaves behind.
John is survived by his wife, Carole Markanich; his daughter, Kathy (Mike) Rudisill; his grandchildren, Aubrey (Chase) Sanders, Cora Rudisill, and Griffin Rudisill; his great grandchild, Wesley Sanders; his brother, Tom (Paula) Markanich; his sister in law, Vallery Markanich.
John is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ken Markanich.
Services for John will be announced at a later date.
