Joseph Samuel Chanley, Jr., 84, Greenwood, died January 21, 2013. Born in Kyana, Indiana on December 31, 1928, he grew up on a farm near Birdseye, Indiana, later lived in Jasper, Indiana, and was a resident of Greenwood from 1958. He married Frieda Emma Rasche of Dubois, Indiana in 1953.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Cora Jacobs Chanley; sisters, Elma Abell (Colonel), Sylvia Harmes (Buford), Edna Durbin (Marvin), Lorena Potts (Russell) and Ethel Bilotta (Emil); brothers, Rator (Alene), Louis and Marion. He is survived by his wife, daughters Mary Hayward (Mike) of Atlanta, Georgia, Rita Hoffmann (Larry) of Austin, Texas, Sara Gormley of Carmel, Indiana, Katy Stephens (Don) of San Antonio, Texas, Angela Chanley of Speedway; sons, Joseph (Cindy) of Danville, Illinois and Andrew (Lara) of Los Angeles, California; nine grandchildren and one great grandson.

Joe was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a corporal at Fort Bragg, N orth Carolina during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Capitol City Conservation Club.

He worked at Jasper Glove Company, Jasper Wood Products, and from 1953 to 1986 for the U.S. Postal Service. He saw mail distribution technology change from his days of hand sorting on the mail trains to zip codes and automation at the Indianapolis air field and main post office where he was a general foreman.

Joe's hobbies included vegetable and rose gardening, wood carving, traveling the country and the national parks, and following local sports teams. He was a lifelong avid reader and lover of music. Before suffering hearing loss, he regaled family with songs on the keyboard and harmonica, and a wonderful singing voice. His farm upbringing remained a special memory, and he said was well depicted in John Greenleaf Whittier's poem, The Barefoot Boy. "In the reach of ear and eye, outward sunshine, inward joy. Blessings on thee, Barefoot Boy!"

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 24, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church, followed by a funeral mass at 1:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
