Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we announce the peaceful passing of Karl D. Clawson on June 15, 2026 at the age of 67. Born in Spangler, Pennsylvania, on September 26, 1958, Karl was the middle child of Dan and Ruth Clawson. In 1966, the family moved to the west side of Indianapolis, and in 1973, to Greenwood, where Karl graduated from Greenwood Community High School in 1976.

In 1980, Karl and his brother Glenn founded K & G Construction. Their father joined in 1983 and the company became Clawson Communications, headquartered in Greenwood, where it remains today. As each younger sibling graduated from college or the military, they too joined the family business, which now employs over 100 people.

Karl was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Susan White; his brother, Russell; brothers-in-law Bill Snell and Jr. Buckley; and sister-in-law Rebecca Buckley. He is survived by his devoted wife and soulmate of 29 years, Ann Stateler-Clawson; his children, Claire (Mark) Hervey and Sam (Lydia) Clawson; his stepdaughter, Jill (Lauren Neal) Bennett; and his adored grandchildren, Iris and Pierce Hervey, who called him "Starry." Also surviving him are his siblings Connie (Garry) Pottenger, Glenn (Nancy) Clawson, Nancy Snell, and Gregg (Becky) Clawson; in-laws Don White and Molly Albright; the broader Clawson Clan; faithful dogs Fred and Maggie; and dear friends Dave, Tim, Tom, his RCL neighbors, and many others.

Karl's greatest passion was fishing. Whether off the dock in Kentucky, chasing marlin in Mexico, salmon in Alaska, tuna in Louisiana, grouper in Florida, musky in Ontario, or Northern Pike in Quebec, he loved it all. His most legendary catch was a 100-pound halibut in Alaska. He especially treasured time on the water with his daughter, stepdaughter, and daughters-in-law.

Beyond fishing, Karl was an avid woodworker, crafting everything from horse head carvings to driftwood ducks and wooden ski deck chairs - cherished gifts for his family. He also enjoyed reading, swimming, and writing extremely witty short stories. For over a decade, he hosted the male members of his family for a "Bad Boys" weekend at the Kentucky lake house, a beloved tradition for fathers, brothers, sons, cousins, and in-laws alike.

Karl was actively involved in an online support group for Meniere’s Disease (an inner ear disorder that affects balance and hearing). He was highly regarded in that community and helped many people with his good nature, stalwart resolve and especially his humor.

Known for making everyone feel like the most important person in the room, Karl was a masterful storyteller, a devoted father, and a man who loved Ann deeply through love letters, spontaneous kitchen dances, and quiet porch conversations. Though his battle with pancreatic cancer was brief, he faced it with the same courage and grace that defined his life, surrounded by his loving family.

The family would like to thank everyone who reached out or visited during his illness. We have been truly blessed by the outpouring of support. Karl will be remembered for the life he lived, the love he gave, and the legacy he leaves behind.A visitation will be held Friday, June 26, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, 1709 S. SR 135, Greenwood, IN, with the funeral service to follow at 5 p.m.A reception with refreshments and appetizers will be held immediately after at Dye's Walk Country Club, 2080 S.
