Larry Mitchell's Obituary

Larry Joe Mitchell, 88, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, just days shy of his 89th birthday. He was born on April 11, 1937, in Clinton, Indiana.
Larry attended Emmerich Manual Training High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy Submarine Service from 1959 to 1965 aboard the USS Thomas A. Edison. His time in the Navy was a defining chapter of discipline and service in his life .
On September 1, 1962, Larry married the love of his life, Ruth Elizabeth Wrobel. Their story began in a dance hall in Hartford, Connecticut in 1960, and together they built a life grounded in love, faith, and family for nearly 60 years until Ruth’s passing on August 21, 2022.
Larry devoted his entire professional career as a Manufacturing Engineer at Allison Gas Turbine, a division of General Motors. His work reflected his precision, dedication, and strong work ethic.A man of deep and unwavering faith, Larry was a longtime member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church in Greenwood, Indiana, where he worshiped for over 50 years. He faithfully served as Chairman of the Elders, Elder, Deacon, and choir member. He was passionate about sharing his faith, leading Bible studies throughout his life—even in his later years at his assisted living community. His well-worn Bible, filled with highlighted passages, was a testament to his love for Jesus.
Larry and Ruth made their home in Greenwood, Indiana for more than 55 years, where they raised their family and built lifelong friendships. In 2025, Larry moved to Burr Ridge, Illinois to be closer to his daughter, Cami, and her family. He found great joy in life’s simple pleasures.
Larry was an avid gardener who took pride in planting a large garden each year, generously sharing fresh fruits and vegetables with neighbors. He also enjoyed golf, fishing trips in Wisconsin with his son-in-law Ron, watching FOX News, and engaging in conversations about politics. Larry was a quiet man, but when he spoke, people listened—and he appreciated things done his way.Above all, Larry was devoted to his family. He is survived by his daughter, Cami (Mitchell) Gerstung and her husband, Ronald Gerstung, of Willowbrook, Illinois; and his beloved grandsons, Jack and Will, who were the pride and joy of his life. Larry cherished the many summers spent with them—teaching them how to plant a garden, playing in the back yard by the creek, and most importantly, about his faith. He and Ruth were present at nearly every event in their lives, offering unwavering love and support. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Mitchell; his son, Brian Joe Mitchell (2015); and his sister, Nancy (Mitchell) Stearns.Larry spent his final days at Burr Ridge Senior Living, where he was deeply loved by staff and residents alike. The outpouring of kindness and respect from those who cared for him was a reflection of the gentle, kind, and faithful man he was.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, 1977 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, Indiana 46143. A memorial service will begin 12:00 pm at the funeral home. Larry’s life was one of quiet strength, steadfast faith, and deep love for his family. He will be greatly missed but joyfully remembered by all who knew him."Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord." — Matthew 25:2
