Leavern Cricket'' Mardis, 74, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2011. Vern was born on November 20, 1936 in Benton, KY to the late Aubrey Curtis and Lillie Marie (Myers) Gore. She married the love of her life Roman Paul Mardis on July 10, 1953.
Vern was a devoted wife and housewife her entire life. Later in life she worked at the Marwood Plaza Kroger. There she made many friends and gave bubble gum to many little ones. She loved keeping her home spotless. She also loved to cook for her family, church, neighbors, and friends. Beans, brownies, coleslaw, Christmas morning breakfasts, and peanut brittle were her specialties. She attended First General Baptist Church.
Vern is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law Jan and Tim McWhirter; 3 grandchildren: Adam, Josh (Meghan), and Ashlee McWhirter; 3 great-grandchildren: Lyla, Luke, and Jayden McWhirter; 2 sisters: Mary Thompson (Mason) and Anna Sirls (Tommy); sister-in-law Dian Gore; and numerous very special nieces and nephews.
Vern was preceded in death by her love Roman Paul Mardis of 57 years; parents; a grandson; sister Rosemarie Gore; and 5 brothers: James, Junior, Larry, Terry, and Charles Gore.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 S. State Rd. 135, Greenwood. The funeral service will be on Monday, October 24, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Larry Johnson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and/or Gleaner''s Food Bank.
