Mary Elizabeth Florea Bland 87, formerly of Greenwood, died Saturday, February 17 at Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was born near Fairmount on October 29, 1919, the daughter of William Lake and Kate (Kinney) Florea, and was the youngest of five children. She was a graduate of Marion High School and General Hospital's School of Nursing in Indianapolis. Immediately after World War II she served as Marion County's public health nurse. She later worked at Johnson County Memorial Hospital in Franklin, was the student health nurse at IUPUI in Indianapolis, and served as a nursing home administrator in Broad Ripple before retiring in 1985. On December 19, 1948, she married William James Bland. A member of Greenwood Christian Church, she had resided in the Greenwood area since 1953. She had lived near Grand Rapids since August 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 30, 1996; her parents; and three brothers. She is survived by two sons, Thomas and his wife, Joyce, of Sparta, MI, and Roger and his wife, Karen, of Indianapolis; one daughter, Barbara Huffman and her husband, Steve, or near Vevay; two step-daughters, Carol Martin and her husband, Larry, of Indianapolis, and Judy Ortiz of Bradenton, FL; four grandchildren, Tara Witt and her husband, Luke, and Emily Bland, all of Sparta, MI, and Bart and Ben Bland of Indianapolis; two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Elijah Witt of Sparta, MI; five step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ruby Seward of New Castle; two sisters-in-law, James P. Sears of Brownsburg; and several loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 21 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home at 1977 South S.R. 135. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 22 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson's Association.
