Vandermeer, Melvin A. August 23, 2007
Melvin A. Vandermeer 89, of Greenwood, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2007. Born on January 17, 1918 in Chatham, Ontario, Canada to the late Frank and Margaret (Ambuul) Vandermeer; he married his late wife Margaret C. Vandermeer on July 8, 1944; he was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He attained a Bachelors degree in education from Butler University, where he lettered in varsity football and basketball, and a Masters degree in education from Indiana University.
Survivors include his son, William (Carolyn) Vandermeer; three grandchildren, Randall Vandermeer, Tim (Melissa) Vandermeer and Diana (John) Truesdale and one great-grandchild, Dakota Truesdale.
He was preceded in death by his parents ,two brothers, Francis (Imogene) Vandermeer and William (Violet) Vandermeer and great-grandchildren Ryan and Kinsey Vandermeer.
He had a 38 year career in secondary education beginning in Jeffersonville, Indiana in 1940 as a teacher and coach (basketball, football, et.al.). He was hired by Center Grove High School (Greenwood, Indiana) in 1955 as teacher and head basketball coach. He eventually became principal at Center Grove High School and retired from that position in 1978.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2007 in the Hall of Excellence at the Center Grove High School, 2715 S. Morgantown Road. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27, 2007 at the Center Grove Presbyterian Church, 2340 S. State Road 135. He will be laid to rest at the Forest Lawn Cemetery 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood. Memorial Contributions can be made to the Vandy and Margaret Scholarship Fund in care of the Center Grove Scholarship Foundation.
