Obituary

It is with profound sadness yet immense gratitude that we honor the extraordinary life of Melvin Waterman, a man who navigated his earthly journey with unwavering dignity, purpose, and an unshakeable commitment to his word.

Born to the late Elmore and Henrietta Waterman, Melvin's early life was marked by love, and after their passing, he was lovingly embraced and raised by Herman and Estel Schweir. This foundation of care undoubtedly shaped the compassionate soul he became.

To countless individuals, Melvin was affectionately known as "Grandfather"—a title he earned through his boundless generosity and genuine desire to help. Whether it was deciphering complex computer issues, sharing his green thumb secrets in the garden, or simply offering a listening ear and a true friendship, Melvin's presence was a comforting and reliable constant. He possessed a unique talent for fixing not just objects, but also brightening days with his readiness to assist wherever he saw a need.

His spirit found solace and joy in the natural world, cultivated through his cherished pastime of gardening and his innate ability to mend and build. Above all, Melvin's life was anchored by his profound faith and deep love for the Lord, which found vibrant expression in his active and devoted involvement within his church community.

Professionally, Melvin applied his keen intellect and meticulous nature as a dedicated systems administrator at RCA. After a well-deserved retirement, his commitment to service led him back to the workforce, contributing his expertise to the state.

Melvin's greatest treasure was his family. His enduring love story with Sandra Waterman spanned an incredible 67 years, a testament to partnership, devotion, and unwavering companionship. He cherished every precious moment spent with his beloved children, Greg Waterman, Terisa Waterman (Abukar Muse), Cheryl Waterman, and Dennis Waterman. His legacy continues through his adored grandson, Alexander (Sami) Williams, and his cherished great-grandson, Constantine.

He now rejoins his parents, Elmore and Henrietta, his step-parents, Herman and Estel, his three brothers Donald, Irvin, and Russel, and his dearly departed grandchildren, Baby Donnie Williams and Megan Williams, who preceded him in eternal rest.

A visitation to celebrate Melvin's life will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, leading directly into a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Following the service, Melvin will be laid to rest with full military honors at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, a fitting tribute to a life lived with honor and service.
