Norris Jay Houston, 83, a life long Indianapolis resident, passed away August 14, 2017 at Rosegate Village. The son of Norris Houston and Opal Parker Stephenson, Jay was born November 28, 1933 in Indianapolis.
Jay was a member of Mt. Zion General Baptist Church and Teamsters Local #135. In 1995, after 35 years of service, he retired from The Indianapolis Star/News, having worked in the warehouse and as a mechanic. Jay enjoyed camping, fishing and family vacations to Florida. He also loved doing auto repair and restorations.
Survivors include his wife, Jean E. Cartwright Houston of Indianapolis; sons, Rod Houston (Dan Forsythe) of St. Petersburg, FL, Steve (Gina) Houston of Crystal Lake, IL, Bruce Houston of Cloverdale, Carl Houston of Indianapolis and Derek Litteral of Indianapolis; daughter, Lorna (Mike) Straub of Indianapolis; brother, Paul L. (Karen) Stephenson of Ft. Wayne; grandchildren, Zach (Rachel) Couch, Jessica (Eric) Jones, J.B. (Michelle) Houston, Margo (Tyler) Turner, Ashley (Jason) North, Quinton (Cari) Houston, Amanda (Jim) Krzyzak, Anthony J. Houston, Heaven Lee Ruble, Bill Straub and Kari Goss; 20 great-grandchildren. Jay was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents, Norris and Cloteen Houston and Opal and Paul Stephenson.
Funeral service will be held 12:00 noon on August 18, 2017 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home - 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood, where visitation will be starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimers Association - 50 East 91st Street, Suite 100 Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
