Indianapolis:
Paul William Kern, Jr., 67, passed away Saturday, July 2, 2011 at his residence. Paul was born on July 20, 1943 in Indianapolis to the late Paul William and Clara Geneva (Thompson) Kern. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1963 as an airman. Paul married his love Ellen Doris Law on March 13, 1965.
Paul began working at Amtrak in Beech Grove in October 1969 as a laborer. He began his union career as a local chairman at the railroad for many years before becoming fulltime. He retired as President and General Chairman from the National Conference of Fireman & Oilers SEIU, AFL-CIO, CLC System Council No. 2 in September 2000.
Paul is survived by his loving daughters Paula Young-Farber and Lori Kern; half-brother Richard Stailey (Susie); 5 grandchildren: Jessika Ford; Joshua Young; Janelle Farber; Justin Farber; and Jennifer Kern; and several nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ellen Kern of 38 years; a half-brother; a half-sister; and brother David Kern.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 8, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 1977 S. State Rd. 135, Greenwood. The funeral service will be on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Danny Thomas officiating.
