Mr. Perley J. Roberts, Indianapolis, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, October 14, 2020. He was 94. Perley was born November 19, 1925 in East Harpswell, Maine a son of the late George Leonard and Prudence (Leavitt) Roberts.
Perley graduated high school in Maine and after graduating was traveling to the west coast to begin his life as an adult, but his trip ended in Indianapolis where he began a long career as a tool and die maker in the automotive industry. He worked 41 years for the Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors before retiring in 1989. Being a tinkerer and builder, he owned and operated R&S Machine Shop while employed at Chevrolet. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Fort Myers, Florida where they lived for several years.
He didn't remain retired very long as he built go karts, mini bikes, a gyrocopter and with his sons and wife rebuilt a 1901 Oldsmobile. He also enjoyed racing and raced midget cars for several years. Perley was a member of United Auto Workers Local 23.
Perley is survived by his sons, Jay (Lark) Roberts and Duane (Rose) Roberts; his grandchildren, Stephanie (Chris) Holiday, Adam (Kim) Roberts, Kelsee Roberts and Patrick (Kalin) Roberts; six great-grandchildren; a sister Madeline as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in passing by his wife Phyllis C. Roberts as well as his siblings.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 pm, Monday, October 19, 2020 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood, Indiana. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
