Phyllis Van Abeele (95) passed peacefully on February 28 after living life on her own terms and with no regrets. Phyllis was born in Elkhart, IN to Franklin and Charlotte (Ghrist) Hershberger. Her depression-era childhood instilled a sense of resiliency, practicality, and gratitude—all traits that she passed on to her family.
Phyllis was a graduate of Ball State University. She spent a lifetime learning, mentoring others and keeping family traditions alive. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and believed in giving back to the community. She volunteered at Community Hospital South, Greenwood Village, Southport Presbyterian Church, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. She had a variety of interests including the arts, world travel and the majesty found in mother nature.
With decades of fond memories are her children: David Pickering, Carol (Edwin) Pickering Sewell; her stepchildren, F. Richard (Judy) Van Abeele, Andra (Ralph) Van Abeele Poehls, John Van Abeele, Thomas (Deb) Van Abeele, Peter (Mary Pat) Van Abeele; grandchildren Edward Sewell and Bradford Pickering and 12 step grandchildren. She is preceded in passing by her parents and partners in life, J. Robert Pickering, and Dr. Frederick Van Abeele. The family acknowledges and appreciates the friendship and comfort that her team of caregivers provided her. They kept her safe and happy during difficult times.
A Celebration of Life will be at 12:00, Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood, Indiana. The family welcomes friends at 10:00, prior to the service.
