Raleigh Glenn Warrenburg, 93, passed on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016. He was born in Indianapolis on April 6, 1923, to Raleigh Scott and Marie (Westerfield) Warrenburg. He was the oldest of 5 children.

Raleigh graduated from Manual High School, Indianapolis. He was a track star under Coach Van Arsdale. Several of his photos are on display on Manual''s walls. Following graduation, he worked briefly in an Indianapolis Defense Plant until entering Military Service at Fort Benjamin Harrison. He served as a Corporal truck driver in the 396th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He also served as a Staff Sergeant with the 16th Armored Division in General Patton''s Third Army. The division won the European Theater Ribbon with the Bronze Star Distinguished Unit Badge and the World War II Victory Medal. He also received the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on March 31, 1946 at Camp Atterbury.

While stationed in Germany, he met his future wife, Sylvia, who is from Estonia. They were going to marry but in order to do so, Raleigh would have to enlist first for another 3 years. Therefore they decided to wait and he returned home. Sylvia arrived in America 1 ½ years later and they were married in Indianapolis on June 16, 1947. Raleigh was employed for 8 years with the A&P Food Stores. While working there he obtained a Diploma under the G.I. Bill from the Commercial Trades Institute in Chicago, Illinois, in 1952. He worked 24 years as a Circulation District Sales Manager for the Indianapolis Star and News. After retirement in 1978 he worked 5 years at the Seasons Lodge in Brown County, Indiana and 12 years at Kroger in Martinsville. He lived in Brown County for 40 years where he enjoyed fishing in his own 5 acre lake. His hobbies ranged from raising homing pigeons, bowling, and a lot of bird watching. He also enjoyed watching butterflies and listening to classical music. He also loved to read and do cross word puzzles until Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma took his eyesight. He then switched to Audio Books from the Franklin Public Library.

Raleigh is preceded in death by a sister, Nelda McIntosh; survived by his wife, Sylvia; 2 sisters, Kay (Tom) Tex of Beech Grove, JoAnn Steele of Alabama; brother, Donald Warrenburg of Ada Minnesota; 2 sons, Philip (Deirdre) Warrenburg and Eric Warrenburg, both of Franklin; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Heart-felt thanks are given to the hard working and compassionate staff at both the Franklin United Methodist Community and Johnson County Memorial Hospital. In keeping with his wishes, no services were held. Cremation was at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood.
