Raymond (Ray) Burl Disher, Indianapolis, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 26, 2023 with his family by his side. He was 91. Ray was born in Jay County, Portland, Indiana, May 14, 1931 a son of the late Georgia Atlanta (Gibson) Disher and William Ellsworth Disher. Ray married Sarah Elaine Parrish on October 2, 1954 and together shared over 68 years of marriage.
Ray joined the United States Navy in September of 1950 and honorably served his country during the Korean War as an Engineer. He was honorably discharged in October of 1958 and went on to work in the trucking industry for approximately 42 years. Ray retired from TNT Holland Motor Express in May 1991 after 26 years of service and spent many years in Florida until he and Sarah returned to Indiana in the fall of 2021. He was a member of Teamsters Local 135, Retiree Chapter and was a winner of the National Million Mile Safe Driver award in 1987. He was a 25-year member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary where he retired as Division Captain as well as a member of The American Legion Post 130 in LaBelle, Florida. Ray loved his family, warm weather and being on the water. He owned a few boats and taught his family to water ski. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, driving his Mustang and collecting 1/34 diecast scale model cars – Sarah counted 100 cars nicely displayed in his garage.
Ray is survived by his wife Sarah Disher; their three children, Jody (Wm "Neal") Belton of Plainfield, William "Bill" (Linda Schwering) Disher of Indianapolis and Deborah (David) Westerhold of Whiteland; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Georgia Disher and William Disher, his brothers, Wilbert (Willie) Disher and Ralph A. (Bert) Disher; two sisters, Mabel Throckmorton and Bertha "Marie" Andrews Gumerson and a great-grandchild, Paige Westerhold.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood, where friends may call Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the American Cancer Society in memory of Raymond.
