Obituary

Richard "Richie" D. Elkins II, 63, of Indianapolis, passed away on April 7, 2025. Richie was a beloved son, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend who lived life full of heart, music, humor, and community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dick "Buddy-Roe" and Norma Elkins, and his sister, Candy Elkins. He is survived by his sister, Amy Elkins Reed (Barry Reed), and his nephews, Jake and Sam Reed. Richie also leaves behind a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him dearly.

Richie grew up on the Southside of Indianapolis. He was a 1980 graduate of Southport High School. He attended Ball State University and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was also an active member of Smith Valley United Methodist Church, where he often played his guitar and sang for the congregation.

Richie never met a stranger. He could mingle with any crowd and usually had them laughing within minutes. He was the kind of guy who always had a smile on his face—and often shared a few words of wisdom, whether you were looking for them or not. He was an exceptional listener, and people naturally gravitated toward his easygoing, joyful spirit. There's not one friend who doesn't have a funny "Buddy-Roe" story! He enjoyed golfing, camping, hiking, playing his guitar, going to concerts, and getting together with his friends for dinner.

He served as President of the Southport High School Alumni Association and led Open Mic Night at SmockTown Brewery, where his love of music and people came together perfectly. Richie touched countless lives, and while he will be deeply missed, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, connection, and joy that will live on in all who knew him.

Richie's celebration of life service will be held on May 3 at 11:00 a.m. at Smith Valley Methodist Church (5293 Old Smith Valley Road, Greenwood, IN 46143). Following the service, friends and family will gather at SmockTown (223 West Main Street, Greenwood, IN 46142) from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m, where we will share memories, listen to music, and honor his remarkable life!
