Richard P Marks, 94, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2019 at Bridgewater Healthcare Center.

Pop (Dick, Rich) was born March 14, 1925 to the late Frank & Charlotte Marks.  He was the youngest of three, sisters Issy & Charlotte, who preceded him in death.  When very young he and his sisters lived in an orphanage, fortunately they were taken from the orphanage and raised by Ma Ramsey.

He is survived by his son, Larry, daughter-in-law Jody, grandchildren Alicea & Travis.

At age 17 Pop was proud to serve in the US Marines during WWII.  His division fought in the Pacific on Guadalcanal, Okinawa, & Iwo Jima.  And he definitely subscribed to: "Once a Marine, always a Marine".

He married Velma (Kinnick) in the late 1940s and had one child, Larry.  In 1955 the family moved to Mt. Morris, IL where he worked for Kable Printing Company until he was 52 years old.  At that time, Sheriff Jerry Brooks allowed Pop to join the Ogle County Sheriff Department as a full-time deputy.  He attended police training school with all the young recruits, graduated, and became "David 40" for 10 years, his most enjoyable employment.  He always said the reason he retired at 62 was because, "they started putting computers in squad cars!".

In his spare time, he always found some project to do, and if nothing else, he would wax his car or lawn tractor.  He also enjoyed coaching soft ball in the summer youth programs.

A short time after he retired, he moved back to Indiana and briefly lived with his sister Charlotte.  To keep busy Pop worked at Carson Square Center helping to redo store units, paint, cut grass, and pick up.

He met Jodie at a community dance in Southport, fell in love, married, and were partners in life for 24 years.  Over the years they went on driving trips and touched ground in all 48 of the continental United States.  Most days, after supper, he and Jodie would take "cool-off" rides in the car for miles and miles.  Unfortunately, Jodie passed away in February 2017, Pop never recovered from losing Jodie.

A special thanks goes out to Anne with Clarity Care Advocates, who became Pops buddy and a fantastic help to Larry & Jody during his difficult times over this past year, as he progressed thru assisted living, long term care, and his passing.

A memorial service will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 1:00pm.  Memorial contributions may be made to Clarity Care Advocates, 11650 Lantern Rd  Suite 210, Fishers, IN.
