Richard J. Martin, 98 of Plainfield passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026. He was born on February 18, 1928 to the late Shelva and Freda (Rednour) Martin. He was married 74 years to Bettie Jo (George) Martin who proceeded him in death in 2024.
Richard started working for Chevrolet in 1950. He also did part-time farming while working for Chevrolet until 1962. After retiring, he started working at Martin Landscaping in 1986 with his son Keith. Richard loved the Lord and his family, and the life he lived was a testimony to it. He was a member of Freedom Nazarene Church and later became a member of Life Pointe Church of the Nazarene.
Richard really loved being outdoors and outdoor sports-hunting, mushrooms and ginseng hunting and especially fishing. Other things he enjoyed were his flowers gardens and watching the Yankees play baseball.
Richard joined the Navy in February 1946 and served until February 1948. He was on the USS Norton Sound (AV11) and was given WWII Victory Medal.
Richard survives by his seven children Sheri (Lloyd) Fernung, Debi (Rick) Garringus, Shannon Martin, Keith (Barbara) Martin, Dana Martin, Vicki (Bill) Richmond and Kim (Ron) Newkirk; 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; five great great grandhildren and two siblings David Martin and Wilma Collins. He is proceeded in death by both parents, his loving wife Bettie Jo Martin and four siblings Loren Martin, Hoyt Martin, Warren Martin and James Martin.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 11:00 am until the time of service at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Richard will be laid to rest next to his wife, Betty Jo at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens
