Mr. Robert Jewell Hurt, Indianapolis, passed away on the late evening of Thursday, February 2, 2023. He was 75. Robert was born July 19, 1947 in Glasgow, Kentucky, one of 12 children born to Jake and Hazel (Levi) Hurt.
Robert was a graduate of Park City High School in Kentucky and attended several classes at Ivy Tech Community College. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in August of 1972. He had been employed in the skilled trades with General Motors before retiring in 2006 after 38 years of service. He was a member of the UAW Local 23.
Robert enjoyed being outdoors and spent much of his leisure time hunting, fishing and boating where he taught most of his family to water ski at an early age. He was an excellent mechanic and devoted his talents both at his job as well as doing work for family and friends. He also liked to watch criminal shows on television such as Chicago PD, Blue Bloods and Law & Order.
Robert also kept busy doing carpentry work with his son, building cabinets, toys and most anything else anyone might want. He loved his family dearly and could often be found at a sporting event supporting and cheering on his children and grandchildren. He loved spending vacation time in both Florida and French Lick, Indiana.
Robert had attended Calvary Tabernacle and Hope Baptist Church where he was head of the bus ministry for several years.
Robert is survived by his wife, Joy (Owens) Hurt; his children, Leslea (Marcos) Martinez and Aaron Hurt; his grandchildren, Jaedyn Denise Moore, Thalea Jewell Martinez and Marcos Martinez, Jr.; his great-grandchildren, Liam and Dylan; his siblings, Marsha (Roosevelt) Owens and Richard Hurt as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in passing by his siblings, Harold Hurt, Jake Hurt, David Hurt, Wilbur Hurt, Elois Vaught, Eleanor Osborne, Joyce Elmore, Nancy Cannon and Charlotte Moore.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm, Friday, February 10, 2023 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Greenwood.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home.
