Obituary

Roger Holmes Mercer, 83, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2010 at Homeview Health Center in Franklin. He was born March 27, 1927, in Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn Joan Mercer; his parents, Charles W. and Ruby F. Mercer; a daughter, Connie Mercer; two sons, Douglas and Roger Mercer II; and a grandson, Daniel Mercer. Survivors include two sons, Tim (Karen) Mercer of Greenwood and Jeff Mercer (Pam) of Bargersville, eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A long time resident of Southport, Roger was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Navy. He spent the bulk of his career in restaurant equipment sales but his true passion was sports. An outstanding amateur baseball player in the 1940''s and 1950''s, he remained involved in athletics through his time in coaching, attending the seemingly endless athletic contests of his children and grandchildren, and following the Chicago Cubs. Nothing pleased him more than a good ballgame and a ballpark hot dog. Funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens and Funeral Home, 1977 S. State Rd. 135 in Greenwood. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be private at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
